In the UK the Labour Force Surveys provide the single
most significant source of national data on patterns of
female entrepreneurship. The last three decades have
witnessed unprecedented changes as women entered
higher education and paid employment in growing
numbers. The overall rise in female economic activity
during this time was also reflected in the number of
women setting up their own businesses (Figure 1).
The UK has also seen a rise in female-owned net
ventures, with companies such as lastminute.com,
Village.com, netimperative.com and everywoman.com,
owned by women, featured regularly in news stories.
Despite the economic problems faced by hightechnology
companies in the last year, Fortune
Magazine (Harrington, 2001) reported that ‘No matter
what happens to the economy, nearly everyone expects
